31% of Free Windows Phone Apps Display Ads

I was interested in finding out how widespread is advertising model adoption in free apps on Windows Phone. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any answers to this question so I decided to conduct a small experiment on my own.

The Method

This is very non-scientific experiment or maybe just not a very scientific one. I’ve just downloaded 100 of the newest free Windows Phone apps and launched them to see any signs of ads. The only “filtering” I did is skipping multiple apps by the same author. I just took one of each. And I didn’t count ads on web pages if app rendered some or all of it’s content in WebBrowser control.

The Results

As you can see 31 out of 100 had ads in them. The rest were ads-free.

It’s interesting to note that if I only took games the results were slightly different.

Which kind of supports a widely adopted belief that ads work best for the long running apps such as games.

Few More Notes

Obviously a hundred apps isn’t probably a good enough statistical set, but it’s better than nothing at all and going for a thousand was outside of my reach, given the time I wanted to dedicate to this research.

Another thing is that a handful of apps were made using either appmakr or followmyfeed. Unfortunately I noticed this trend when I was already too far into the experiment and didn’t adjust to this (not sure if I had too). Apps of both of these types didn’t include ads.

I was really pleased that quite a few of the tested apps used AdDuplex. Thanks!

Statistics Irregularities

We have launched an updated ad serving engine to accommodate the new mixed model monetization concept. Over the next couple of days you may notice some irregularities in statistics due to the fine-tuning of the updated algorithms. These should even out over a course of several days.

Monetize Your Apps with AdDuplex

Update: As of January 2012 this option has been discontinued. We decided to focus on what we do best – help you promote your apps. We recommend that you use other ad networks focused on monetization to make money from advertising. For optimal performance we recommend using commercial ad networks and AdDuplex in combination. This can be done either manually or using a meta control such as AdRotator.

You can now opt-in into a mixed model on AdDuplex. This will let you monetize your apps in addition to promoting them for free.

How it works…

You just specify that you want to monetize your app in the settings. You can choose what percentage of your exchange balance you want to monetize. The system will automatically serve commercial ads to your application up to the specified percentage of your impressions. All unsold inventory will return to your exchange balance and you’ll get free advertising for it as you do now.

Here is an example. Let’s say your current exchange ratio is 0.8 and you specify that you want to monetize up to 50% of your exchange balance. In this case, if you serve, say, 1000 impressions per day, 400 will go into the exchange program as before (you will get 400 impressions of your ad), 200 will go to AdDuplex and up to 400 will be filled with commercial ads. If, for example, there’s only enough commercial ad inventory to fill 300 of these spots the remaining 100 will go back into your exchange balance and you will get 500 impressions of your ad instead of 400.

Payments

We want to make the amount of money you can get as transparent as possible so this is going to work this way: at the end of each month we will announce a fixed CPM rate for these mixed model ads for the next month. So for each thousand of commercial ads displayed you will get that amount, but the number of displayed paid ads will depend on the amount of sold commercial inventory on the network.

Based on this published rate you will be able to decide what percentage of your exchange balance you want to monetize. The rate itself will be based on the median rate of the ads sold on the network. The CPM rate for the month of June, 2011 will be $0.60 (60 US cents) per thousand impressions.

At this time payouts will be made via PayPal only. So it will work only in the countries where you can receive payments via PayPal. By default your profile email address will be used, but you can specify a different PayPal email address for each app. Minimum payout amount is $50.

How do I start

You can opt-in into the program right now by going to the details page of your app. Click “edit”, check “Monetize this app” and specify desired percentage and PayPal email address.

You can do this right now, but keep in mind that the program will start in June, 2011.

Quick Fix Release of Silverlight and XNA SDKs

A bug has been identified in the recent release (version 1.2) of our Silverlight and XNA SDKs. The bug affected impression and click tracking. It is now fixed and published as 1.2.1 release.

Please download this new version and use it instead of 1.2.

Version 1.2 of SDKs for Silverlight and XNA Released

We’ve released version 1.2 of AdDuplex Silverlight Control and XNA Library. These versions include several additions to the API based on your feedback and a couple of minor bug fixes.

You can download the new versions via the Client Area.

Here are the change logs for the releases:

Silverlight

  • FEATURE ADDED: added AdLoaded, AdLoadingError and AdClick events
  • FEATURE ADDED: RefreshInterval property added to control frequency of ad requests (minimum is 20 seconds, default – 60)
  • BUGFIX: Design Mode: the control was trying to load ads in design mode

XNA

  • FEATURE ADDED: added Enabled and Visible properties to control the behaviors of Update() and Draw() methods. Enabled=false – won’t load and animate new ads, Visible=false – won’t react to taps
  • FEATURE ADDED: added an overload with boolean parameter to Draw() to specify if Begin()/End() should be called on SpriteBatch inside the Draw() method
