It’s time for another Windows Phone statistics report. How are the Windows Phone 8 updates propagating? Is Lumia 520 still growing its share? What do we know about new unreleased phones? Read on to find answers to these questions and more.

Data source

This report is based on data collected from 2,899 Windows Phone apps running AdDuplex SDK v.2. The raw data analyzed was collected over the day of January 23^rd, 2014 (UTC time) unless otherwise stated. We have made every attempt to consolidate different reported phone model names under their canonical retail model names, but it is possible that some of the rare model name variations were not accounted for.

Worldwide stats

Yes, Lumia 520 is still growing, but not as fast as it used to. We can see that worldwide it has only grown by 0.2% from a month ago. The most notable gain this month is from Lumia 625. It has grown by 0.4 percentage points by move 2 steps up, outgrowing both venerable Lumia 800 and Lumia 820. While current flagships are still out of the top 10, an interesting thing to note is that we’ve seen more Lumia 1520s than 525s (a hopeful new lower-end leader).

And as far as manufacturers go, Nokia gained another 0.2% of the WP8 share, but not as much as it used to. We are hearing reports that Samsung and HTC had huge discounts on their WP 8.0 era flagships and they were selling for less than mid-level Lumias.

Now this is where it gets interesting – there’s no change in the WP8 vs. WP7 chart from last month.

The big question is how is this possible? Did someone sell some huge amount of leftover WP7s? Didn’t WP8 sell at all? The answer, most likely, is in the nature of our data. As you know, we are measuring usage of the apps and last report was based on data collected on December 27^th – basically the next day after people in most Christian countries unpacked their presents. So, our guess is that there was more activity from the new users unpacking their presents and downloading apps on that day, which contributed to a higher WP8 number last month and then, as they switched to their normal phone usage pattern, the number dropped back to “normal” growth and ended up at the same point a month later.

Going deeper into the OS version, here’s how Windows Phone 8 update situation looks like:

Two thirds of the WP8 devices are on the Update 2 (aka GDR2) and less than 15% are already enjoying Update 3.

Let’s look at what is going on in specific countries.

United States

Numbers fluctuate a bit from last month but the overall lineup is pretty much unchanged. The only exception is Lumia 1020 switching places with HUAWEI W1.

T-Mobile is getting stronger every month, now servicing more than quarter of all WP8s in the US. A substantial amount of those phones report their operator as “WiFi Calling” which we assume is T-Mobile’s service.

United Kingdom

Lumia 520 has gained another 10% in the UK in 2 months since we covered it last time. Lumia 625 is now at number 4 with 6.4% (was #10 with 2.8%) and Lumia 1020 has entered the top 10.

France

Similar trends to those we’ve just seen in UK can be seen in France too. Lumia 520 has crossed the 40% mark and Lumia 625 is doing even better than in UK with second spot and 9.5% share. Another interesting tidbit is Samsung ATIV S replacing HTC 8X at number 10.

Germany

Lumia 920 is still the king in Germany but it looks like this will be the last month of its leadership. In the past 2 months Lumia 520 has gained more than 6% and is only 1% away from taking the crown. Samsung ATIV S is doing exceptionally well in Germany and is now at #3 with 8.3% (was #4). And Lumia 1020 has finally arrived into the top 10.

Italy

Italy was one of the strongest markets for Windows Phone 7, but it was slow to convert to WP8 at first. Luckily, those days are over and former longtime leader Lumia 610 is now only at #4 preceded by 3 WP8 Lumias (520, 820 and 620). Lumia 625 has doubled its share in the past two months too.

India

India was one of the most exciting markets to watch throughout 2013, but the situation has stabilized recently and, even though numbers have changed a bit, top 10 this month looks exactly the same as 2 months ago.

Australia

Lumia 625 moved 2 places up and entered top 3 in Australia. And Lumia 1020 is higher in the chart than anywhere else we’ve covered so far – at number 5 with 6.3% share. We can also see Samsung ATIV S in the top 10 (and not at #10) which wasn’t the case 2 months ago.

Unreleased phones

Not much was happening in the new unknown device area in the past several months but here are a couple bits of information:

• Samsung SM-W750V got some coverage earlier this month and we have some things to add. The bad news is, even though we’ve seen this phone quite a lot, we have only seen it on Verizon (or some test networks). The good news is that it’s probably not a Verizon variant of ATIV S, but a really new Windows Phone from Samsung. It has a 1920×1080 resolution and (this is where it’s hard to believe and it contradicts other reports) it’s a 4.3” screen. Obviously this could be just a wrong data reported on a test device, but that’s what we are seeing so far. It also runs Windows Phone 8.0 in all instances we’ve seen, so we are likely to see it before 8.1 hits the streets.
• Nokia RM-997 is another phone that has been spotted several times in the past and here are some details about it. It runs WP 8.0, has a 4” WVGA 800×480 screen and we have seen it almost exclusively in China.
