It is time for a new installment of our Windows Phone statistics report. Is Windows Phone 7 still relevant? Did Lumia 520 take the charts by storm? What new devices to expect soon? Read on for all of this and more.

Data source

This report is based on data collected from 701 Windows Phone apps running AdDuplex SDK v.2. The raw data analyzed was collected over the day of June 7^th, 2013 (UTC time). We have made every attempt to consolidate different reported phone model names under their canonical retail model names, but it is possible that some of the rare model name variations were not accounted for.

Worldwide stats

Nothing has changed in the top-3 of the most popular Windows Phones in the world, but we see pretty significant changes starting from number 4. Lumia 620 showed some gains to kick out its last generation sibling (610) from the fourth spot. But the biggest gain was demonstrated by the Lumia 520 which almost doubled its share and moved from the 8^th spot to number 5.

After slowing down for a couple of months at the 80% mark, Nokia continued its march toward total domination, most likely thanks to the two lower end models mentioned above. More than 83% of the Windows Phones out there have their roots in Espoo, Finland.

If we look at Windows Phone 8 only, it is clear that Samsung is the biggest loser here, but it looks like bulk of its loses went to HTC, not Nokia.

And as for the OS itself. This is the first month (at least according to our stats) when Windows Phone 8 devices outnumbered those running Windows Phone 7.

United States

The rankings didn’t change much in the US over the month, but we can see Lumia 521 and 928 popping up on the radar, off to a good start. As before, more than 50% of the US market is controlled by just 3 phones.

The Windows Phone 8 lead is more pronounced in the US than world as a whole with 70% of the phones in use made after October, 2012. Based on that, we thought that it would be more interesting to look at the manufacturer and operator shares of Windows Phone 8 exclusively. This should give us a better picture of where the things are heading, rather than being distracted by the “history”.

Correction: the WP8 US Manufacturers chart that was initially posted here and probably elsewhere on the web was incorrect and represented the situation outside US rather than US. Thank you to our reader “akk23” for pointing this out!

 

Last month we saw that, unlike the rest of the world, Nokia wasn’t as dominant in the US (while still at impressive 66%). But if we take WP8 only, it’s almost as bad for the rest of the OEMs as anywhere else.

And as for the mobile operators for Windows Phone 8… we have a clear leader and it’s not AT&T. Verizon leads with 43% and, since Lumia 928 has just started shipping, it’s only natural to expect for that lead to increase next month. It looks like T-Mobile has a winner on their hands too (in the form of Lumia 521), so it will be interesting to look at the operator split in the months ahead.

France

France was always an eccentric country when it comes to Windows Phone. Unlike any other country we covered, HTC 8S was a dominant phone in France for quite some time now. However, judging from the fact that Nokia Lumia 520 didn’t exist two months ago (when we last covered France), it is clear that Nokia did their homework and push their entry level Lumia in a market that was so welcoming to the entry level HTC. Lumia 520 is already at number 2 with more than 15% and will probably dethrone the 8S come July.

Italy

Italy is one of the poster markets for Windows Phone, but it is still heavily dominated by first-gen WP7 Lumias. Newer models made some gains from 2 months ago (especially 620 and 520), but I’m pretty sure a bigger uptake is needed in order to keep the Windows Phone momentum in the country.

Germany

While not much has changed in the top part of the chart in Germany, a notable fact is that Samsung ATIV S has a relatively high share in Germany compared to other countries where it rarely shows up in the top-10.

India

The biggest sensation in the last month’s report was Lumia 520 shooting straight to number one in India. It is no surprise that it strengthened its lead this month. Another new Lumia (the 720) has more than doubled its share over the last month too.

China

Lumia 920 has gained another 7% over the last two months in China. I’m not sure what to make of it, but it looks like Chinese like the more expensive phones. Or maybe our data is skewed by the Great Chinese Firewall.

Australia

Not much has changed in Australia. Other than usual suspect, Lumia 520, getting a strong start with 5%, there’s nothing that changed noticeably from our two-month-old report.

New unidentified devices

Here are the devices we have seen, but were unable to identify. This list excludes repeat sightings of devices from previous months. 

• NOKIA RM-955_apac_prc – seen exclusively in China. Has WXGA screen.
• NOKIA LC4301 – probably a version of the test device we have seen before (P4301). Seen exclusively in US. It has an interesting firmware version – redmond_121012_123259. Runs various builds of WP 8.10.
• NOKIA P5238 – probably another test device. Running 8.0 though. WXGA screen.
• HTC HTCPO881 Sprint – seen in Taiwan and US (not surprising). WVGA screen.
• HUAWEI H887L – seen in US and China. WVGA screen.
• HUAWEI W2-T01 – this is obviously a Huawei W2 we’ve seen in multiple leaks. Apparently it was supposed to be a higher end phone, but from what we see (only four sightings) it has a WVGA display.
• SAMSUNG SGH-I187 – not sure what this is. Seen in Korea and US only 10 times. 720p screen.

As for Windows Phone 8.1, we have seen it quite a few times. Mostly on test devices and emulators, but on quite a few Lumia 920s and HTC 8Xs too. The highest build number we have seen is 8.10.12106.0.
